Understanding BC Hydro’s Shift to Net Billing

April 2026

BC Hydro is Moving to Net Billing

Here’s What That Means for You

You may have heard that BC Hydro is transitioning from net metering to something called net billing. If that sounds a bit technical, don’t worry—we’ll break it down in simple terms so you know exactly what to expect.

So… what’s actually changing?

Up until now, net metering has been pretty straightforward. Any extra solar power your system produces gets sent back to the grid, and you receive credits at the same rate you pay for electricity.

With net billing, it works a little differently:

  • You’ll still use your solar power first — that part doesn’t change
  • Any extra power you send back to the grid will be credited at 10 cents/kWh
  • When you need power from the grid, you’ll still pay the regular rate

Why this matters

This change means your solar power is most valuable when you use it yourself, rather than sending it back to the grid.

The good news? There are some simple ways to make the most of your system:

  • Run appliances like dishwashers or laundry during the day
  • Shift energy use to when your system is producing power (like charging your EV midday)
  • Keep an eye on how your home or business uses electricity

Small adjustments like these can help you maximize your savings under the new system.

A quick note on battery storage

This is where things get a bit more interesting. Adding a battery allows you to store excess solar energy during the day and use it later—like in the evening when your system isn’t producing.

While it’s not a must-have, it can be a great way to:

  • Get more value out of your solar system
  • Rely less on the grid
  • Maximize your overall savings
  • Keep the lights on during outages

We’ve got you covered

Changes like this can raise questions, and that’s completely normal. The good news is your solar system still works for you—it just means being a bit more intentional about how and when you use your energy.

If you’re wondering how net billing affects your specific setup—or whether adding a battery makes sense—we’re always here to help.
