How it Works

How does solar power work?

Simply put Solar power works by converting light from the sun into electricity. Sunlight in the form of photons hit the solar panels on your roof or ground mount. The panels absorb and convert the energy from freed electrons to DC current, which then flows to an inverter and is converted from DC electricity to AC electricity. This electricity is then used to power your home and if there is excess power generated it can be exported to the grid.

How do you size a solar system?

We take many factors into consideration, such as location, electrical consumption, budget, and existing electrical infrastructure. We work with our client's needs for the best outcome.

What is a Grid Connected System

This is a system that is connected to the electrical grid. This allows inflow and outflow to the electrical grid. When your system is producing more than you are consuming in your home it flows out to the electrical grid and your utility company will credit that electricity on your account.

How long does a solar system last?

25 - 30 Years

Can we add panels in the future?

The easy answer is yes but there are factors like your current electrical panel capacity. There may need to be electrical modifications to accommodate adding more panels in future. If you would like to add more panels to your system please reach out, we are happy to help guide you.

Is Solar worth it in BC?

The average home in BC uses 11,000kWh of electricity per year. BC is a great place for solar! This chart was taken from The Canada Energy Regulator and shows the potential for Solar in BC. Why not take advantage of the sun to help offset or eliminate your electricity bill.

What does the average system cost?

This is a tricky question as there are many factors taken into consideration when we design a system such as location, electrical consumption, budget, and existing electrical infrastructure. Typically, the average system can cost between $16,000-$30,000.

What is Self Generation?

The Net Metering Program is designed for those who generate electricity for their own use. The utility company will allow excess electricity generated by your Solar System to be credited on your utility bill at a 1-1.

What will be the payback on my system?

This depends on system size and electrical consumption. On average we see payback periods of 9-12 years.

What does payback mean?

The payback period is defined as the number of years required to recover the original cash investment. Once your payback period is over your solar system starts paying you with electricity! Our calculated payback does not include the added value to the home. This value is typically dollar-for-dollar, as it is considered a home renovation/upgrade. According to Zillow Real-estate, the average home value increase is 4%.

Life-Span, Warranty & Maintenance

What maintenance will my solar system require?

Solar panels, once installed properly, require very little maintenance. Use your online monitoring to check on your system regularly. You can use a soft bristled broom or soft rubber squeegee to clean debris off the panels or a quick spray with the hose usually does the trick. DO NOT use chemical cleaners on your panels.

Do solar panels break easily?

No, Solar panels are installed all over the world, in an array of extreme temperatures and climates. Solar panels are rated for snow, rain, sleet and hail.

Do I need to clean the snow off my solar panels?

Cleaning off the snow is not recommended; icy, snowy roofs can be extremely dangerous. You can use a soft bristled broom or soft rubber squeegee if you choose to clean the snow off. Please be careful!

What if I have to replace my roof at some point after having a solar system installed?

Solar arrays and racking can be removed and re-installed by solar professionals to accommodate roof replacement. Costs are usually quite reasonable but will depend on system size, roof pitch, and roof type. Please reach out to us for guidance around whether to replace your roof before your solar installation.

What is the warranty on my solar system?

Please refer to your Warranty package for details. Typically our Warranty is 25 Years on our Solar Panels and 10 Years on our Micro Inverters.
