We were thrilled to work with this client on bringing their vision for a clean energy solution to life. From the very first conversation, it was clear they were committed to doing solar the right way—efficient, safe, and built to last. Their cooperation and proactive approach made this project a success from design to completion.
Project Overview
This commercial solar installation, located on a flat torch-on roof in Kamloops, BC, involved the design and execution of a 27kW solar energy system. After reviving and revising an earlier quote from the previous year, we worked closely with the client to adjust system sizing, improve efficiency, and accommodate the latest rebate opportunities.
System Specs:
- Panels: 60 × Longi 450W
- Estimated Annual Production: 27,000+ kWh
Design & Structural Considerations
Given the flat roof and structural load limitations, we developed a custom ballast plan to stay under 6 pounds per square foot, ensuring safety without compromising system performance. The roof design also presented a unique challenge due to limited interior space for electrical equipment. As a result, much of the electrical gear—including the splitter, disconnects, and solar generation panel—was installed externally in NEMA 3R-rated enclosures.
Electrical Upgrades
To ensure code compliance and system safety, several key upgrades were made. A new 400A splitter was installed on the transformer’s secondary side to handle both the solar system and main panel. We added a 200A fused disconnect to protect the main panel, and a 100A solar generation panel with its own disconnect was mounted outside. All cabling was routed externally due to space constraints inside the building.
We took care to minimize power outages during installation, working closely with the client to communicate shutdown windows and ensure their operations were impacted as little as possible.
Outcome
The final result is a highly efficient solar system that maximizes BC Hydro rebates while meeting all structural and electrical requirements. The client now benefits from a reliable solar array that offsets a significant portion of their energy use—without needing to make compromises on safety or performance.
We’re proud to have partnered on this project and look forward to helping more businesses in Kamloops and beyond go solar.
